Ultrasound

Ultrasound is an excellent tool that enables us to evaluate your pet quickly and painlessly

We regularly use a ‘state of the art’ ultrasound machine with Doppler capabilities. Ultrasound is an excellent tool that enables us to evaluate your pet's chest or abdomen quickly and painlessly, often without even needing an anaesthetic. This has a number of advantages, particularly in older animals where general anaesthesia may be contraindicated. We regularly perform diagnostic procedures under ultrasound guidance such as:

  • cystocentesis (sampling urine from the bladder)
  • abdominocentesis (sampling fluid from the abdomen)
  • fine needle aspirates from pathological lesions

This allows us to reach a diagnosis quickly and often without having to put an animal through surgery or even anaesthesia.

We regularly perform comprehensive examinations of the following abdominal structures:

  • Stomach
  • Small and large intestines
  • Liver
  • Spleen
  • Kidneys
  • Bladder
  • Adrenal Glands
  • Pancreas
  • Blood Vessels
  • Lymphatics
  • Ovaries and Uterus (females)
  • Prostate (males)

In addition to abdominal ultrasonography, we are able to perform heart scans or echocardiograms. This allows us to directly visualise the heart, record measurements and assess its function. Using ultrasound in this way is essential to reach a diagnosis for a range of heart conditions and means that we can start treating your pets as soon as a disease process is identified.

We regularly perform conscious pregnancy scans for our clients’ pets. We are usually able to detect foetal heart beats and give an approximation as to the number of viable puppies or kittens present.
